Make the most of your HRA

Make the most of your HRA

If you are keen to know about how to plan your investments to gain maximum returns as well as maximum tax benefits, this piece of information is best suited for you.

HRA (house rent allowance), which is provided to salaried people under Section 10 (13A) of Income Tax Act, 1961, can be used to claim tax benefits.

From in.finance.yahoo.com:

The four components of HRA calculation

When you are calculating HRA for tax exemption you take into consideration four aspects which includes salary, HRA received, the actual rent paid and where you reside, i.e. if it is a metro or non-metro. If these aspects remain constant through the year, then tax exemption is calculated as a whole annually, if this is subject to change, as in a rent hike or shift in residence etc. then it is calculated on a monthly basis.

The place of residence is significant in HRA calculation as for a metro the tax exemption for HRA is 50% of the basic salary while for non-metros it is 40% of the basic salary.

How HRA exemption is calculated

To figure out how much HRA exemption you are eligible for, consider these three values which includes a.The actual rent allowance the employer provides you as part of your salary, b. the actual rent you pay for your house from which 10% of your basic pay is deducted, c. 50% of your basic salary when you reside in a metro or 40% if you reside in a non-metro.

The least value of these three values is allowed as tax exemption on your HRA. You can discuss restructuring your pay structure with your employer in order to avail the most of your HRA tax benefit.

The best thing about HRA is that you can pay rent to your parents or the landlord to claim tax benefits.

Mobile numbers and addresses on Facebook a risk

Posted by admin | Blogs, Reviews | Wednesday 19 January 2011 6:18 am

Mobile numbers and addresses on Facebook a riskUsers should remove their home addresses and phone numbers from their Facebook accounts, according to a security expert.

Graham Cluley said Facebook now gives third parties access to that information and developers of applications get access to the contact information of users who install their apps.

From in.finance.yahoo.com:

“These permissions must be explicitly granted to your application by the user via our standard permissions dialogs. Please note that these permissions only provide access to a user’s address and mobile phone number, not their friend’s addresses or mobile phone numbers,” the Sydney Morning Herald quoted Facebook’s Jeff Bowen as saying.

However, Sophos security expert Cluley, has raised doubts over the move.

“You have to ask yourself – is Facebook putting the safety of its 500+ million users as a top priority with this move?” he said.

“It won’t take long for scammers to take advantage of this new facility, to use for their own criminal ends.”

Cluley advised that users should take personal info such as home addresses and mobile numbers off their pages.

Cluley said, “You can imagine, for instance, that bad guys could set up a rogue app that collects mobile phone numbers and then uses that information for the purposes of SMS spamming or sells on the data to cold-calling companies.”

UPA teared apart by 2G

Posted by admin | Reviews | Tuesday 11 January 2011 6:09 am

UPA teared apart by 2GThe recent leak of Nira Radia tapes has brought a split in the UPA government. The leaks of talks between Nira Radia and Ratan Tata have inflicted more damage on the UPA Government than two years of Opposition accusations about the length and breadth of corruption in the spectrum allocations of 2007.

This is primarily because the 2G leaks prove the perpetuation of a systematic and systemic fraud with the DMK at its vortex.

From in.news.yahoo.com:

The Congress stands to gain from the DMK’s decline. The Congress vote-share has been steadily increasing in Tamil Nadu as voters get fed up with both the DMK and AIADMK. If the Congress is able to increase its vote-share from around 15 per cent of the last election to about 20 per cent in the next Assembly polls, it will become a major player in a non-Dravidian, “third force” coalition.

The persons who stand to gain the most from such an outcome are Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram and his son Karti Chidambaram who control the party in Tamil Nadu. Karti’s posters are already pasted all over Chennai.

The Rs 1,76,000-crore scam has become a national issue, just like the Bofors scandal which decimated a Congress with over 400 seats two decades ago.

The leaks could have come from two possible sources, the home or finance ministry, making it all that difficult for the government.

Apple sued by iPhone and iPad users over privacy issues

Apple sued by iPhone and iPad users over privacy issuesA group of iPhone and iPad users have sued Apple Inc alleging that some applications were passing personal user information to third-party advertisers without consent, as per court filings.

Maker of popular apps such as Textplus4, Paper Toss, Weather Channel, Dictionary.com, Talking Tom Cat and Pumpkin Maker were also named co-defendants in the lawsuit along with Apple.

From in.news.yahoo.com:

“None of the defendants adequately informed plaintiffs of their practices, and none of the defendants obtained plaintiffs’ consent to do so,” the suit filed on Dec. 23 said.

The Unique Device ID that Apple assigns to its devices has become an attractive feature for third-party advertisers looking for a means of reliably tracking mobile device users’ online activities, the lawsuit said.

In April, Apple amended its developer agreement to ban apps from sending data to third parties except for information directly necessary for the functionality of the apps.

However, the lawsuit alleged that Apple has taken no steps to actually implement its changed developer agreement or enforce it in any meaningful way due to criticism from advertising networks.

The lawsuit seeking class action was filed in a federal court in California.
