Mobile number portability now an SMS away

Mobile Number Portability that helps mobile subscribers to retain their existing mobile numbers when they switch from one operator to another will be making a debut on November 24 from Rohtak in Haryana.

The feature will help unhappy mobile customers to change their existing operator without changing the mobile number.

From Thehindubusinessline.com:

Process

For porting, a subscriber has to send an SMS (PORT<space>Mobile Number) from the number he wishes to be ported, to number 1900. The subscriber will receive a Unique Porting Code (UPC) by SMS from his current service provider.

The subscriber will need to apply in the prescribed application form to the chosen new service provider quoting the UPC which will act as a reference while filling up the application form with the new service provider. The new service provider will then take action to get the required processes completed to enable the subscriber get connected to his network. Porting has to be completed within seven working days. TRAI has fixed a ceiling of Rs 19 on porting charges which the new service provider may collect from the subscriber. Post-paid subscribers, before making the porting request, have to make sure that their last bill has been paid failing which the request for change to new service provider shall be rejected.

In the case of pre-paid subscriber, any balance amount left will not be carried forward when the number is transferred to the new service provider. Once a subscriber ports his number to the new operator, then, he will have to wait for at least 90 days before he can change his operator again.

This system will be introduced in all parts of the country by the end of December, provided the operators are ready with their network.

Trial for foolproof iris scanners undergo at UK airport

Trial for foolproof iris scanners undergo at UK airportPassengers checking in at a major UK airport will have their eyes scanned as part of a new trial.

While check-in at the Manchester Airport, foolproof machines will be installed for recognizing the iris of an individual as they walk around.

From in.news.yahoo.com:

The technology has the potential to overhaul security and customs, with airport bosses hoping it could help in the fight against terrorism.

Passengers who agree to take part will have their iris scanned at check-in and it will then be used to identify them as they enter the security search area when it is scanned again, reports the Daily Mail.

Officials hope the scanner could stop criminals from swapping boarding cards between arriving at the airport and getting on a plane – as the technology will scan the person and not the ticket.

Volunteers for the scheme are asked to walk at a normal pace through a demonstration scanner at the end of a five metre-long walkway.

As they emerge at the other side, the passengers can then see on screen whether they have been correctly identified.

Human Recognition Systems, the firm behind the technology, says the early results have been ‘very positive’ in terms of accuracy.

Google bars data from Facebook

Posted by admin | Reviews | Wednesday 10 November 2010 5:48 am

Google bars data from FacebookAn intensifying rivalry between Google Inc and Facebook has started after Google decided to block Facebook and other Web services from accessing its users’ information.

Google will not allow other services to automatically import email contact data of its users for their own purposes unless the information flows both ways.

From in.news.yahoo.com:

Facebook, with more than 500 million users, relies on email services such as Google’s Gmail to help new users find friends already on the network. When a person joins, they are asked to import their Gmail contact list into the social network service. Facebook then tells the user which email contacts are also on the social network.

In a statement, Google said websites such as Facebook “leave users in a data dead end.” Facebook did not immediately provide a comment on Friday.

While Google framed the move as an attempt to protect its users’ ability to retain control of their personal data on the Internet, analysts said the move underscored the battle between Google, the world’s largest search engine, and Facebook, the dominant Internet social network.

“The fundamental power dynamic on the Web today is this emerging conflict between Facebook and Google,” said Gartner analyst Ray Valdes. “Google needs to evolve to become a big player in the social Web and it hasn’t been able to do that.”

“If people do search within Facebook, if they do email within Facebook, if they do instant messaging within Facebook, all of these will chip away at Google’s properties.”

Google recently accused Facebook of siphoning up Google contact data, without allowing for the automatic import & export of Facebook users’ information.

First ever human-like robot all set for space launch

First ever human-like robot all set for space launch

Robonaut 2, the first human-like robot designed for use in space, is all set to be launched by NASA.

The humanoid robot that resembles the torso, head and shoulders of a person was designed by NASA and General Motors for working alongside astronauts to complete chores and repairs aboard the International Space Station.

From in.news.yahoo.com:

Once aboard the space station it will be tested to be sure it works as expected in the zero gravity environment, and later will be tested on other tasks including handling flexible fabrics and possibly helping out with some light housework.

“From the very beginning, the idea was the robot had to be capable enough to do the work but at the same time be safe and trusted to do that work right next to humans,” Fox News quoted Rob Ambrose at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, as saying.

In addition to its human-like fingers, the machine has soft palms that can grasp and envelop objects. It is also a “soft” robot, Ambrose said. It is also padded all over to prevent nicks and scratches.

Robonaut 2 also has safety sensors – if it feels an unexpected object (like an astronaut’s head) in its way, it is programmed to stop its movement. Or, if something hits Robonaut 2 with enough force, the robot will immediately shut down.

Rob Ambrose at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston said that it is really a giant leap forward for a tin man.
