Can a rapist escape punishment by marrying victim?

Can a rapist escape punishment by marrying victimWhen a rapist offers to marry the victim, many consider it to be the best solution but isn’t this concept a relaunch of the victimization of the girl or women in question again.

Many NGO workers have suggested that a marriage between the rapist and the victim is no solution and punishment should be harsh. It was even remarked that continuance of such a bizarre approach will actually encourage the male society to place their hands on any girl they fancy.

From Timesofindia.indiatimes.com:

Psychologist Seema Hingoranny agrees, “A woman should never marry her rapist. Rape is a big trauma and the victim requires intensive therapy to get out of it. Some people get married because of their insecurity and the stigma that no one will marry them. But these girls barely forgive the rapist.” She goes on to add, “Also, you cannot completely ignore the psychological status of the man. Someone who can commit such a heinous crime has something incorrect in his character and such marriages can never work. It could lead to more violence. I am totally against this idea. Instead of getting her married to the rapist, family and the government should think of ways to rehabilitate her.”

Some have issues with its TV portrayal too. Says an activist, “Indian television has replicated these real life incidents into reel life. What they don’t understand is that this could lead to serious repercussions. TV channels should ensure that they are not propagating the act by showing victims marrying their rapists.”

The aftermarks of a rape are deeply etched in the mind of the victim and there just cannot be any leniency.

Please post your comments and let us know what you think to end this thing once and forever so that female harassment is stopped for once and all.

Rules of smart phone etiquette

Posted by admin | Reviews | Wednesday 20 October 2010 2:13 am

Rules of smart phone etiquetteThere is a urgent need for people to practice some smartphone etiquettes with iPhones and BlackBerrys seeping into offices, classrooms, and homes according to an expert, Anna Post.

Post, however, said that it is often difficult to demarcate what is socially acceptable or is taboo while using these high-tech gadgets.

From in.news.yahoo.com:

“When the technology almost changes before the society can adapt, it can be confusing for people. We don’t want to be offensive to others, but we have to be using the technology to even start to figure out what can be offensive,” she said

Difference in age plays another role. What’s offensive for one generation may be the norm for another, she said.

“It’s just so funny sometimes the difference in mentality between generations. I might be a little annoyed if my boyfriend took a call at the table, whereas for a younger generation, this is a normal action. Its considerate to answer the phone because it might be important, and to me that’s just a fascinating distinction,” she added.

But Post said some situations are not open for debate.

“Something like 87 percent of people think that it’s wrong to be using a mobile device at a religious service. I agree completely with that. This is a very solemn occasion. This is a very serious important and respectful moment for the people participating, and its just not appropriate for the occasion,” she added.

Anna Post is an author and spokesperson for the Emily Post Institute, an organization that specializes in etiquette training.

Economy fails to get spurred by cheap debt for corporations

Economy fails to get spurred by cheap debt for corporationsMany big companies like Microsoft are piling billions of dollars through bond issues at ultra-low interest rates and sad part for the economy is that these companies are actually spending the money on new factories, equipment or jobs. Instead, they are stockpiling the cash until the economy improves.

This happens at times when many households and small businesses are being turned away by bank loan officers and recession again seems so much likely.

From NYTimes.com:

The development presents something of a chicken-and-egg situation: Corporations keep saving, waiting for the economy to perk up — but the economy is unlikely to perk up if corporations keep saving.

This situation underscores the limits of Washington policy makers’ power to stimulate the economy. The Federal Reserve has held official interest rates near zero for almost two years, which allows corporations to sell bonds with only slightly higher returns — even below 1 percent. But most companies are not doing what the easy monetary policy was intended to get them to do: invest and create jobs.

The Fed’s low rates have in fact hurt many Americans, especially retirees whose incomes from savings have fallen substantially. Big companies like Johnson & Johnson, PepsiCo and I.B.M. seem to have been among the major beneficiaries.

Dana Saporta, an economist at Credit Suisse in New York, says that these companies are benefiting themselves by borrowing and keeping this cash, but it is not benefiting the economy yet.

Currency tactics of China adopted by others

Currency tactics of China adopted by othersMore and more countries are retreating from some free market rules guiding international trade in recent decades and have started playing by Chinese rules.

Brazil and Japan have already taken measures or at least prevented them from appreciating any further against the Chinese currency in an attempt to devaluate their currencies.

From NYTimes.com:

In Europe, policy makers have begun to fret that, despite the debt crisis that sent investors fleeing just a few months ago, the euro  has now risen sharply again against the dollar, potentially weakening exports by making European goods more expensive. Those exports have been one of Europe’s few sources of growth, and President Nicolas Sarkozy of France, who will take over leadership of the Group of 20  biggest economies, said over the weekend that he was pushing for a new system of coordinating global currencies as wealthy nations did in the 1970s, before a free market orthodoxy took hold.

It is unclear if the result will be a “currency war,” as Brazil’s finance minister recently warned, or if these are just warning shots, fired to force Beijing’s leadership to make good on years of promises that it would allow the value of its currency to appreciate.

But that question is so in the air that Treasury Secretary Timothy F. Geithner felt compelled last week to try to dampen the fear. “We’re not going to have a trade war,” he said at a forum sponsored by The Atlantic. “We’re not going to have currency wars.” He acknowledged that the only way to break the cycle was for a country “to decide it is in its own interest to allow its currency to appreciate in response to market forces,” and he said he believed that a “substantial fraction of the Chinese leadership” now understands the need to allow the currency to rise in value.

The rest of the world has started showing signs of mimicking the art of manipulating currencies for national advantage, while resisting political pressure from trading partners, like China and many more are expected to join the league in coming years.
